Lord Vishnu and his incarnation of Shri Krishna are worshipped on the day of Vishu. It is believed that, on this day, Krishna slew the asura-king Narakasura; because of this reason, Krishna idols are venerated on this occasion.
The Malayalam word ‘Vishukkani’ literally means ‘that which is seen first’ on Vishu. The traditional belief is that one’s future, will be better if one views auspicious joyful things as the first thing on Vishu. Therefore, Malayali’s spend the day before preparing a setting, usually in a tray, of auspicious items. This setting is the first thing they see when they wake up on the Vishu day. The Vishukkani setting consists of items such as rice, coconut cut open, all seasonal fruits including jack fruits, betel leaves, gold, coins, Vaalkannadi, golden colour Konna flowers (Cassia fistula) which bloom in the season of Vishu, Nilavilakku, idol of Lord Vishnu or his incarnation of Sri Krishna, and other auspicious items.
Vishu similar to that of Onam is celebrated by Malayalees world over, irrespective of their cast or religion. Vishu is the harvest festival and the astrological New Year of the Malayalies. Vishu indicates the movement of the sun to Aries or the Mesha Rashi.
